Look, if you have been watching Australia's employer-sponsored visa space, this is the announcement you need to know about. The government has just confirmed a new Skills in Demand visa will replace the Temporary Skill Shortage (Subclass 482) visa in late 2024.
This is not a minor tweak. This is a complete restructure.
Four Years and More Flexibility
The new visa will be valid for four years. More importantly, it will give workers greater ability to change employers and clearer pathways to permanent residency.
The government has openly admitted what we have been telling clients for years: Australia's employer-sponsored program is too complex and too slow. Their exact words? "In comparison to the rest of the world, we may lose skilled workers just because of how complex and lengthy our employer-sponsored program is."
That is rare. They are finally listening.
Three Tiers: Which One Fits You?
Specialist Skills Pathway
Earning at least $135,000? You qualify for this tier in almost any occupation. The exceptions are trades, machinery operators, drivers, and labourers.
Here is the part that matters: processing target is 7 days. Seven. If you are a high earner looking at skilled work visas, this pathway could be a game-changer.
Core Skills Pathway
This will cover most temporary skilled migrants. Your occupation needs to be on the new Core Skills Occupation List, and you must earn at least the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (currently $70,000).
Essential Skills Pathway
For lower-paid workers with essential skills. The details are still being worked out. Consultation is expected in the first half of 2024.
The Threshold Will Rise Every Year
One detail worth noting: the income threshold will be indexed annually by the wage price index. That means the minimum salary requirement will increase each year in line with wage growth.
Plan accordingly.
What Should You Do Right Now?
The changes sound promising. Faster processing, more flexibility, better PR pathways. But here is the reality: the legislation is not finalised. The visa is not expected until late 2024. Timelines slip.
If you are planning an employer-sponsored application, the current TSS visa is still available. Do not put your career on hold waiting for legislation that may be delayed.
